bystander effect 旁观者效应

Some may cite the social psychological phenomenon of ‘bystander effect’. Others, especially those in China familiar with the case of Peng Yu, may consider the fear of repercussions¹ as a result of offering aid to be a more likely root cause.

有些人可能会把路人的反应归结为“旁观者效应”这种社会心理现象。还有些人，特别是熟悉“彭宇案”的人们会认为更深层次的原因是人们担心救助会招致同样后果。

Bystander effect指的就是心理学上的“旁观者效应”，也称为Genovese syndrome（源自纽约妇女Kitty Genovese在房间内被刺死，38名凶杀目击者没有报警）。也就是 the more people who witness an event, the less likely any one individual will provide help.（旁观者越多，提供帮助的人就越少。）典型的说法是，“别人都不去救，为什么我要去？”

在紧急事件现场的人越多，出手帮助的可能性就越低，有两个原因：pluralistic ignorance（多数无知），错误地以为没有人帮助，就表示肯定是不需要帮助；diffusion² of responsibility（责任分散），指发生在超过某一临界规模的人群中，没有明确的责任分配的趋向。这种心态可见于短语“没有一个雨滴认为是自己造成的水灾。” Diffusion of responsibility还体现为groupthink（团体迷思），即团体在决策过程中，由于成员倾向让自己的观点与团体一致，因而令整个团体缺乏不同的思考角度，不能进行客观分析。
