Interviewer：How many languages can you speak?

Brook：Besides ❶ Chinese, I can speak English and French.

Interviewer：You mean you can read and write both of them?

Brook：No, I can only carry on ❷ a simple conversation in French.

Interviewer：Can you read and write English well?

Brook：I can speak the language better than I read and write.

Interviewer： Do you speak the language well enough to communicate with people of

English-speaking countries?

❶ “besides”表示“除……之外（还）”，例如：I have five other books besides

this.（除了这本书以外，我还有五本别的书。）“except”也表示“除……之

外”，但其着重于强调“排除在外”的含义，例如：We all went there except

Tom.（除了汤姆以外, 我们都到那儿去了。）

❷ “carry on sth.”表示“进行或做某个事情”，例如：The consulate¹ will carry on a

political dialogue with Indonesia.（领事馆将会和印度尼西亚进行政治对

话。）

❸ “used to”后接动词原形，表示“过去曾经……”，例如：Jimmy used to be a

friend of mine.（吉米过去曾经是我的朋友。）另外，它还可以表示“过去常

常做某事，例如：He used to come and visit me every day.（他过去常常每天

都来看我。）

❹ “enable sb. to do sth.”表示“使某人做某事成为可能，使某人能做某事”，例

如：I need a job which would enable me to work at home.（我需要一份能让我

在家里办公的工作。）
