The first few months of 2023 were pretty unexceptional in terms of global temperatures. That changed in July when the world began a remarkable and almost unbroken streak of daily air temperature records.

More than 200 days set new daily global temperature records, according to BBC analysis of the data from the EU climate organisation¹ Copernicus. Two days in November were more than two degrees Celsius² above pre-industrial levels. That is another first and there's unlikely to be any respite this year. The Met Office said today there's a good chance 2024 will be even hotter than 2023.
