However, in Xi'an, salespeople1 have come to learn that women play an important role in making decisions about house purchase. In Xi'an, 60% of the families that buy a house rely on the lady to make the decision. A recent survey conducted among single women also shows that 80% of the female respondents plan to buy a house for themselves before marriage. Most women love to have a house of their own and to decorate the house in a way they like. The house might not be very large. Yet it should be big enough to contain all the dainty things that women like. It could even be a used house, as long as it has a suitable room for the lady to stay alone to enjoy her privacy2. All women, married or unmarried, would like to buy a house once they can afford to. A survey shows that most of such women house buyers are intellectuals living in cities, aged3 25-35 and full of vigor4. They might represent the mainstream5 of city women in future. In a recent online survey, more than half of the female respondents agree that “if ever I become rich, the first thing I want to buy is a 'house.'” For women living in modern society, buying a house is no different from buying things like cosmetics6, perfume, or pretty clothes. If they can afford to buy something they like, they will just buy it. In family house purchase, it is often the women who make the final decision. In many Chinese families, women decide how to spend the family income. Even if the husband pays the money, the decision is still made by the wife. “If I happen to buy a house she doesn't like, or if I don't buy the house she favors, I might still lose in the end since my wife will have a lot of ways to make me change my mind,” many husbands claim. |
