intended orbit 预定轨道

Scientists are working to rekindle¹ the Russia-China joint² Mars probe after the spacecraft failed to enter the intended orbit on day one.

 

在首日飞行器未能进入预定轨道后，科学家正抢修中俄航天合作项目火星探测器的发动机。

 

文中的intended orbit就是指“预定轨道”，也可以称为designated trajectory³。Intended就是指“预期的，打算中的”，比如His remark had the intended effect.（他的话产生了预期的效果。）Intended还经常用来表示“有意的，故意的”，比如an intended insult（蓄意的侮辱）。在口语中，intended还可以表示“已订婚者”，“某人的未婚妻”就可以用one's intended wife来表示。

 

此次的engine trouble（发动机故障）使Mars probe（火星探测器）未能进入intended orbit。“萤火一号”是我国首个interplanetary spacecraft（行星际探测器），用于研究火星的magnetic environment（磁场环境）和upper atmosphere（高层大气）等等。
