Applying for a Position as a Secretary

Interviewer：What kind of job are you interested in?

Annie：I want a job in which I can use English. I would also like to be able to have some

responsibility in my work.

Interviewer： I really appreciate that. I would expect my secretary to be able to work

independently, and take over ❶ some of my ordinary responsibilities, such as answering routine¹

correspondence², taking phone calls for me, and sometimes assisting³ me with personal affairs.

Annie：Yes, I see. In my previous job, I did typing and filing every day.

Interviewer：Have you had any experience as a guide?

Annie：Well, not exactly. But I have shown some of my foreign friends around ❷ Beijing.

Interviewer：Once in a while ❸ we have visitors from abroad, and I would like to be able to

ask my secretary to take them shopping and sightseeing.

Annie：I think I would like that.

❶ “take sth. over”的意思是“接管……，接任……”，例如：His only reason for

investing⁴ in the company was to take it over.（他投资这家公司的惟一原因是想

接管这家公司。）若要表达“从某人那里接管……”，则要用“take sth. over

from sb.”，例如：Jack is supposed to take the work over from Carmen.（杰克

应该会接管卡门的工作。）

❷ “show sb. around sth.”的意思是“带某人参观/看某物”，例如：Leo showed

her around the house.（利奥带她看了看房子。）

❸ “（every）once in a while”意为“有时，偶尔”，例如：I do get a little anxious

every once in a while.（我偶尔会有点焦虑。）
